Competitive & Non Competitive Teams
MET offers both competitive and non-competitive team opportunities in a unique "catch-riding" format, where riders compete on horses they’ve never ridden before. This format enhances adaptability and horsemanship skills, vital for equestrians at all levels.
MET teams compete as part of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) and the Athletic Equestrian League (AEL).
Learn more about the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), offered to 4th thru 12th graders here.

Washington DC Competition Teams
Our Washington DC competition teams operate out of Metropolitan Equestrian @ Rock Creek Park Horse Center and include mounted team practice sessions as part of the program. Riders participate in structured weekly practices with MET coaches to prepare for competitions throughout the season.
Students competing in the Washington DC program attend competitions within the regional IEA and AEL competition zones serving the greater DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. The IEA regular season runs from September through January, with qualifying riders advancing to Regionals, Zones, and National Finals between February and April. The AEL competition season in the DC region begins between February and April, with National Finals taking place in May.
NYC/Long Island/New Jersey Competition Teams
The Metropolitan Equestrian competition team programs in NYC/Long Island and New Jersey are designed to provide flexibility while supporting rider development and competitive success.
Team tuition for the NYC/Long Island and New Jersey programs does not include mounted team practice sessions. Instead, riders are required to participate in a minimum of four riding sessions per month at the equestrian facility of their choice. This structure allows riders to train in programs that best support their individual goals while remaining active members of the MET competition team.
Riders competing in IEA will primarily attend competitions throughout the New York, Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions. The IEA regular season runs September through January, with qualifying riders advancing to Regionals, Zones, and National Finals between February and April. Riders competing in AEL will primarily attend competitions in the Westchester, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts regions. The AEL season runs from September through April, with National Finals held in May.
Riders in both programs compete with MET coaches present at competitions to provide guidance, support, and team coordination throughout the show season.
Riders may train at any facility that meets appropriate safety and instructional standards. MET may request confirmation of riding participation periodically to ensure readiness for competitions.
